The Hero Twins

CHARACTERS The Hero Twins 100 REVIEW Ó PDF, DOC, TXT or eBook Ñ Dan Jolley Credible skill at playing Pok ta Pok the Mayan ball game angers the lords of Xibalba rulers of the land of the dead When the lords challenge them to a Pok ta. The Hero Twins is a graphic novelization of a Mayan myth about twins Hunahpu Hunter and Xbalanue Jaguar Deer In this action folktale the brothers outsmart the Lords of Xibalba successfully completing harrowing tests with uick thinking skill with the Mayan ball game and special powers Throughout the arrangement of the illustrations and text is easy to follow The folktale is framed with the story of modern boy whose homework is to read about the Hero Twins Although intended to engage reluctant readers this framing dates the book with depictions of old telephone technology Jolley also attempts to engage readers with contemporary language such as one twin saying This is gross when crossing the River of Pus Nevertheless Witt s ink and colored illustrations depict authentic Mayan clothing and architecture and the cover makes the story look exciting Witt s depictions of Xibalba are scary but not overly so making this perfect for young readers Although only 48 pages long the author recognizes that children s slower reading speeds and includes a table of contents The book also includes a map showing where the Maya lived a glossary to assist with the pronunciation and meaning of Mayan words and a list of related websites This story was reviewed by a Mesoamerican folklorist expert to ensure accurate representation of the folktale
