Astrid Yrigollen ´ 4 Free download Free download ´ PDF, DOC, TXT or eBook ´ Astrid Yrigollen characters His Black Wings Ot teach that the Grand Council built this new world of peace and beauty on hidden blood and greed He has plotted for years to bring down the family that enslaved his own people Suddenly he has the last living heir in his graspEtrigan Lowood rejects the world that forces him to hide He is powerful plagued with a terrible dark beauty WINGS It is these wings that carry him out only at night to watch the unwanted intruder in his home A creature of refined instinct yet little social grace he is strangely captiva. I have finished reading this book last week and I couldn t stop gushing over it Let s start with the beginningThe cover for His Black Wings is appealing to me At first I thought it was a Japanese inspired novel because of the cover art it looks like a manga Then when I started leafing through the book I have read the About Me page of the author and found that she likes Japanese mangas and anime Figures The first few pages were dull but the story grew right before I started to get bored It started with the narration of the heroine about her state which was confusing in a way In the beginning I thought it wasn t a good style to confuse the readers with the descriptions of the current situation the heroine was in but I realized that it was effective in trying to get attention I was like What Why I don t understand It made me curious and a bit frustrated with the slow pace in the beginning but it also glued me into reading it That s something I commend the author forThe story progressed and I was growing to like the heroine She was portrayed as a typical girl my age and I sometimes see myself in her They say that when a writer made the reader nods in agreement in the depiction of a character s life it means that there is reality in her work This is what I saw in His Black Wings The personality of Claren is believable and I admire the author that she was able to create such strong woman character despite the setting in Victorian EnglandThe conflicts given in the first part of the story were understandable to shape Claren s personality They were also smartly linked with other s experiences and the twist in the story was predictable yet interesting The author carefully planned the creation of her novel and I felt a key was inserted into a lock and everything clicked in place at the end of the story All the conflicts and experiences were included in a web beautifully weaved enabling the characters to meet and interactSpeaking of characters of course this novel won t be titled as it is without Etrigan Lowood the hero of this story At first I thought he looked something sinister based on the early descriptions but when Claren finally met him I realized that this YA novel has a tinge of romance as well Their story was common except for the disfigurement of Etrigan but everything else isn t new However I am a hopeless romantic and a sucker for uiet mysterious man so I fell in love with their storyIt is only a light read that I have finished after pouring over it for five hours And what can I say First It is like another story of Beauty and the Beast Though I can t really see Etrigan as a beast I hope you get what I mean Second There s an element of something similar with The Secret Garden in this novel I always smile whenever I remember Collin in Etrigan s character and Mary in Claren So with those two comments shall I recommend this book to others Yes It is something that others can read to believe that love is still true for others and the acceptance of having an imperfect partner is vital in any relationshipI have received a copy of this book for review

To read reviews by me visit Views Reviews I loved this book I loved this book so muchBut I must warn you my review is not going to be so professional I m having a blogger s block plus when I read the book I was so engrossed in it that I didn t take any notes So this will just be me rambling about how much I loved this bookI started this book at night and I spent my night and most of my morning finishing than half of the book And this is how I looked in the endI m not even kidding I could have taken a picture of myself and shown it to you all but I would ve scared you then Plus I was just too tired to take a pictureAnyway from the first page I was hooked What first appealed to me was the writing The writing was amazing It reminded me a little of Jane Austen s but maybe that s because the only book I ve read set in the time period of balls gowns is Pride Prejudice And even though this was set some time in the future or that s what I felt everyone and everything had gone back to the Victorian era The writing style was really interesting and there was not a moment during the whole book when I found it boringThe story was really good The way the author built up the suspense told the secrets little by little kept the reader guessing It was awesome And the world she built it was all really real Like I could see it happening She really did a great job with the storyMy second favorite thing in the book were the characters especially Claren Claren was a strong and independent girl and I saw myself a lot in her The way she thought was very much like the way I think She was smart and witty and I loved reading her thoughts I loved Fredrick He was such a nice man I felt sorry for all he had to go through but he had a nice heart and I liked him a lot I loved Etrigan He was the most adorable thing ever Sometimes I wanted to crawl into the book and give him a big hug He made my stomach flutter and he was really cute Kurten was one of those characters you just wanted to kill He was evil And I did not feel sorry for him at all I think the book summarizes him perfectly in these wordsSometimes people become mean because of horrible experiences It s a gradual process that hardenstheir hearts and minds and forces them to develop a thick skin In order to survive they must adapt to their harsh surroundings They in turn become mean This was not the case with Kurten Kurten Wandsworth as the favorite and only child in the household was from the beginning a spoiled headstrong bullyThe side characters were likable too I loved Horace and Dekker They were so funny and cute I really liked Mrs Whitby tooThe only thing that bothered me was the change between first person and third person At first it was OK when Claren s part was in first person while the other character s were in third person but in the end during Claren s part the author kept switching between first third person which got kinda confusing I think it would ve been better if the whole book would ve been written in third personOverall I loved this book The romance was really sweet the story was amazing the writing was awesome and I d highly recommend it

After her parents death Claren is harassed by an ill mannered suitor who would use force upon her She flees her hometown in hopes of finding work and beginning a new life Luckily she finds work as Mr Brighton s secretary and finds sanctuary in his home Claren s new employer seems to have planned for her than he first lets on he wishes for Claren to befriend his disfigured son who lives in isolation Oh my goodness what was I thinkingLet me say that I do not think this book was entirely bad but there was much left to be desired I purchased this book over a year ago and thinking back I really uestion my decision of expecting anything grand out of it This book is a self published book and it shows That being said it was part of the reason why I decided to read it in the first place I came across it on goodreads and it caught my attention by its claim of being a Beauty and the Beast retelling The fact that it was a self published book made it intriguing I had never read one before and thought I would give it a shot What made me hesitate was the cover But I will get back to that later on In the end the amount of very positive feedback convinced me to give it a shot Before I roll out my list of complaints I will go over the good The unfolding of the story was mostly very well done Most twists were not easily picked out and there was a lot of good foreshadowing I also thought that the world was very interesting It was a Victorian like dystopia where most things would appear like in a historical setting but then you would also have robotic characters and various machinery The dystopian setting made it interesting enough to find some enjoyment in this story I did certainly keep on reading and wondering how it will all turn out Mr Brighton s son Etrigan was probably my most liked character It does not come as a surprise though as I generally tend to like the Beast character in Beauty and the Beast stories His father was also an overall interesting character as well as some of the others Unfortunately that is all the good I am able to say This book has so many things both in and outside that simply do not work For the outside the blurb is too long and too detailed The blurb should capture a reader s interest in a few lines and not with a whole plot summary This blurb practically gives it all away Then there is the cover The one thing that made me hesitate about reading this book in the first place I enjoy manga but I do not enjoy novels that have obvious manga influences In my opinion these two media do not work well together The cover is obviously manga inspired so I had my doubts about whether or not the plot would be as well Unfortunately it was While I support people who enjoy art drawing illustrating and the like I do think that you reuire a certain level to have your art featured as a book cover I do not feel that this artist s skill level was high enough for this project which made the novel appear less professional Not to mention that the actual print of the cover is of a terrible uality and full of pixels Next point would be the actual writing There are times when passages and lines read nicely but it is certainly not consistent And although the book claims that it has been edited I cannot help but wonder there were countless spelling mistakes Often the apostrophes were incorrect there would be no space between words and in some chapter there were random letters and numbers as though a cat had run over the keyboard Not only were there spelling mistakes but the overall layout was not well handled There was no table of contents there were no page numbers and the chapter titles would often be found at the end of the page with the actual chapter starting on the next It also drove me up the wall how the author used different fonts Sometimes using a different font for certain parts of a book can work out nicely but it is never good to use too many different fonts It was also very confusing how the character s thoughts were sometimes in italics and sometimes not The direct speech was also a constant issue Often the direct speech would be secluded from the rest of the text by gaps but without indication of who the speaker is And the reaction of the receiving character of what was being said would be placed directly after the speech Example The door is locked miss Claren shook her headTo me reading a line like that makes it seem as though Claren is the speaker If these two lines weren t so separate from the rest of the text it would not be as bad but this often had me stuck trying to figure out who was saying what It also gave the book a messy layout Sometimes you would have whole paragraph pages and then you would have pages with just a few lines separated by spaces It simply did not look goodThen there is the name Lilly Or was it Lily Claren goes by the secret identity of Lilly Yet on every other page it s suddenly written as Lily These are small inconsistencies but there are so many of them There is also a character with a strong accent but the way this accent was spelt out changed on every other pageAlthough I said that some lines and passages were nicely worded it does not apply to all that is written in this book There had been some lines where the same word was used too many times within one line I I I stammered I tried It just does not have a good flow when reading At other times some words just sounded too blunt I was particularly peeved with Claren s dog Naza Instead of using barked or using any other word to describe the sounds of a dog the author literally wrote that the dog said wuff Wuff really And I am all for animals showing emotions and all but what is with the line She laughed her doggy laugh What is a doggy laugh Why would the dog laugh a doggy laugh Could that really be the only way to word it There were also various other spelling and grammar mistakes but I shall leave it at thatThen we have our main character Claren She is a high candidate for most unappealing main character What was her personality like I cannot say On one hand it was said that she is a strong character and has will than other women of her time Yet she never does anything and is constantly crying Of course everyone in the book loves her he has her personal army of loving menThey all say she is a gentle soul If I remember correctly in the first chapter she smashed her would be fianc with a poker over and over again That was uite the vile and brutal entry to this book To be fair he tried to rape her But I did not expect nor want this book to open up with an attempted rape to begin with And while of course Claren should defend herself the way it was described made her seem like a violent and crazed character This won t help me to warm up to a main character I think the most problematic part was how the mangaanime inspired themes were added Why on earth would there be kimono wearing androids that speak Japanese to customers in this Victorian setting Why is there any Japanese at all It made no sense that these androids were speaking Japanese but it made even less sense that the other characters replied back in Japanese The Japanese itself was full of spelling mistakes If you really have to add a foreign language do it properly Also if one adds a foreign language so casually do not expect all readers to understand Some side note indicating what language it is and what is being said would be beneficial to readers who are unfamiliar with the language Even worse though was the inclusion of the nosebleed I think fellow animemanga readers would know what I am referring to It is not uncommon that a manga character would end up with a nosebleed when having certain fantasiesIt s weird and nonsensical but it has somehow become one of the weird aspects of manga and should not be used elsewhere It just seems out of place and anyone unfamiliar with anime and manga would probably have no understanding whatsoever why this character broke into a nosebleed upon hearing that Claren was having a bathOne of the few good points of this book the interesting world was left vastly unexplored If you plan on including a dystopian setting work with it If not leave it as a plain love story The first setup was well done It was a nice way of combining contemporary and historical elements But in the end there were so many loose ends about the world Who and what exactly is the Great Council What when where and between whom did the Great War take place What became of the slaves It is hinted that they might still be alive so why does no one go and rescue them Is Etrigan going to spend his entire life in hiding There is close to no conclusion to any of the build up other than that all characters were happily together as friends and lovers But there is no solution or conclusion about their world They know about secrets and intrigues but they are satisfied with their personal happy ending The villains get away with everything and apparently living hidden from the rest of the world is okay as long as you have a handful of people to come and visit you Also no one seems to uestion what would happen if Etrigan passes on his deformation to his children And that is another issue Etrigan s deformation is nothing but him having wings That would make him different and stand out obviously But a deformation All everyone says is that he is handsome beautiful muscular which the author mentioned way too often and that he has wings I do see how wings can be an issue but deformation seems a poor word to describe itI have never read a fanfiction but this is exactly what I imagine them to be like It is not entirely bad but there is so much left to be desired and I am puzzled by the positive reviews Best read of 2013 65 Stars honestly I cannot see how these reviewers and I have been reading the same book I believe you can rate by personal preferences and by uality And this book simply does not live up to the ualities of a published book self published or not
