Night Bird Calling by Cathy Gohlke is an excellent historical fiction that kept me enthralled from beginning to end This is a southern historical fiction that takes place early 1940s in rural North Carolina in the tiny almost forgotten town of No Creek Here we get to see this small town through the eyes of its small cluster of members that still reside Life is hard it is rough it has many obstacles in this impoverished rural village We are introduced to a wonderfully eclectic and radiant group of complex characters that all are fascinating in their own rights All have wonderfully drawn personalities complex pasts imperfections faults and their own strengths as well Each character adds to the overall plot in an essential way All are looking for love escape forgiveness acceptance friendship fellowship true purpose in life and guidance from each other and from God whether they realize it or not This is a brilliant narrative The author is beyond talented in her ability to portray the flawed human image To read of the trials of Lilianna Grace and how she was able to find her great Aunt Hyacinth again how Celia was able to find her full family and purpose again how Reverend Jesse was able to find his true calling and also what he didn t even realize he was missing in the process how the town was able to create a library an environment for learning for bettering oneself for realizing their self worth enough to want to better themselves this and was present in this novel I will not say that the entire narrative was easy subject matter To read about abuse whether domestic societal or substance in any form is difficult Also reading about racial oppression and segregation oppression and abuse from church officials gone astray and from the unfair laws and restrictions that negatively affected women and children and minorities it is all there and is written about appropriately and is much needed I truly enjoyed reading about this full cast their journeys their changes their improvements and their satisfying endings I felt moments of sadness moments of triumph and also moments of fear where I gripped my seat in suspense All of these indicate to me the signs of an excellent novel with an excellent author I hope everyone has the ability to read this gem and be able to experience all this wonderful novel has to offer Highly recommend 55 stars Alys et Vicky, tome 2, recto verso unfair laws and restrictions that negatively affected women and children and minorities it is all there and is written about appropriately and is much needed I truly enjoyed reading about this full cast their journeys their changes their improvements and their satisfying endings I felt moments of sadness moments of triumph and also moments of fear where I gripped my seat in suspense All of these indicate to me the signs of an excellent novel with an excellent author I hope everyone has the ability to read this gem and be able to experience all this wonderful novel has to offer Highly recommend 55 stars
