Pak â 6 summary Stood summits with President Trump She also sheds light on how a top intelligence analyst assesses thorny national security problems avoiding biases uestioning assumptions and identifying risks as well as opportunitiesIn piecing together Kim's wholly uniue life Pak argues that his personality perceptions and preferences are underestimated by Washington policy wonks who assume he sees the world as they do As the North Korea nuclear threat grows Becoming Kim Jong Un gives readers the first authoritative behind the scenes look at Kim's personality and motivations creating an insightful biography of the enigmatic man who will likely rule the Hermit Kingdom for decades and has already left an indelible imprint on world histor. First reviewing this as a piece of writing congratulations to Jung Pak for making this eminently readable it wasn t dry or academic as much reading in this area can be She has a very nice style and weaving in snippets from her go to book on being a CIA analyst was interesting though on that later However ultimately I could give it only 3 stars really 25 stars because the vast majority of the book was just a rehash of information already very much in the public sphere I didn t learn much new at all Probably the first two thirds was your standard survey of the post war history of North Korea including the rise of Kim Il Sung and the era of Kim Jong Il This context is absolutely necessary but it could have been shorter or the structure could have started weaving in Kim Jong Un sooner I bought this book hoping for a deeper CIA insight into North Korea It is an intelligence agency after all But I was surprised for example at the relatively freuent uoting of journalists including good ones like Anna Fifield it must be said One might have thought it would be the other way around journalists uoting the perspective of experts in the intelligence sector but not only them I understand the resourcing pressure agencies like the CIA must be under and the difficulty of obtaining intelligence from this very closed society but I expected It was virtually the last chapter when I started to get something new from this book her personal perspective on the way forward Pak mentions in her acknowledgements that the book grew out of a paper she had previously written Perhaps that was all she really had to offer Still a first time reader might get out of this book in terms of the historical contextOn Pak s conclusion it s probably a fairly predictable prescription from a former CIA officer The extremely knowledgeable and highly respected Bob Carlin has written a much expert review of this book than I can including a discussion of the serious limitations of CIA analysis in general It is well worth reading I agree with him that despite Pak insisting we mustn t get stuck in mindsets progress is stymied by CIA beliefs held with almost religious fervor for decades now that the North Koreans have never been and will never be sincere in dealing with the United States How can we move forward then Aren t we doomed to remain stuck in a standoff with neither side moving on that basisI would argue Pak s US centric maximum pressure prescription including her insistance that China and Russia cooperate with the US to control the agenda on the peninsula is unrealistic and at the very least fails to understand the very different interests of those parties Am I right in thinking it smacks of colonialism too by taking agency away from South KoreaWhat I do agree with is her statement that crafting a solution to the North Korea problem should be likened to solving the Rubik s Cube This 3D puzzle befuddles players with seemingly ending permutations only to frustrate them further when they see that even though they ve solved one side the other five are a jumble of colors Many people give up struggling with the Rubik s cube But the puzzle can be solved Perhaps Pak the CIA and the US Administration should read the tips for success from the game s maker link below Get to know your Rubik s cube mindset is critical master one layer before moving on to the nextInstead of insisting on unrealistic all or nothing solutions for the problem that is North Korea perhaps we should take it one step at a time action reward action reward action reward understanding that reward doesn t constitute a Trump resort on the beach at WonsanI ve never solved a Rubik s Cube but I hope there are people who will be able to solve this geopolitical puzzle one dayhttpswwwrubikscommediaguidesR

Pak â 6 summary A groundbreaking account of the rise of North Korea's dictator Kim Jong Un from his nuclear ambitions to his summits with President Donald J Trump from a former CIA analyst considered one of the leading American experts on the North Korean leader inside and outside the US governmentWhen Kim Jong Un became the leader of North Korea following his father's death in 2011 predictions about his imminent fall were rife North Korea was isolated poor unable to feed its people and clinging to its nuclear program for legitimacy Surely this twentysomething with the bizarre haircut and no leadership experience would soon be usurped by his elders Instead the opposite happened Now in his mid thirties Kim Jong Un has solidified his grip. Impressive Book About Kim Jong UnI don t have much experience in North Korean politics and history This book by Jong H Pak helped me comprehend a lot than previous books on the country and it s leader has It s also engrossing and involving I am alarmed at what the North Korean people have had to put up with and the book is very good at enlightening readers why we should all care about North Korea and this terrifying leader

Pak â 6 summary read Becoming Kim Jong Un 2450I’ll be honest This book is a bit of a mess First of all it could have been a uarter as long without giving up any of its meaningful content The same points are repeatedly 2 3 times within a chapter written in a different way And then the same points are brought up again 3 chapters later A cynic may suspect it is because the author simply doesn’t have that many meaningful points to make I would enumerate the examples but i

Pdf/E–book (Becoming Kim Jong Un) I'm a sucker for anything to do with North Korea and this book didn't disappoint Interesting read from beginning to end Pak does an excellent job of presenting Kim Jong Un as he really is or at least as close to he really is as we can surmise given how tightly controlled information flow is within the DPRK Pak makes a clear case for us to see KJU as a rational actor even as the rest of the world seems content with reducing him to
