The opening of this book reads like a farce a comedy of manners a vicious taking apart of characters worthy of Oscar Wilde It does diminish and get rather serious over the course of the novel but it never entirely goes away Henry's v

PDF or EPUB The Bostonians è Henry James I found The Bostonians repulsive on so many levels Where to even beginJames is creating a world where it seems he wants you to find certain things repulsive and you do as a 21st century reader although not necessarily uite as he hopes The novel opens with Basil Ransom a gallant Mississippian paying a visit to his Boston

Summary ´ The Bostonians 106 Found nowhere else in James” writes A S Byatt in her Introduction “It is about idealism in a democracy that is still recovering from a civil war bitterly fought for social ideals written with a ferocious precise detailed and wildly comic realism?. HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE HENRY JAMESI ve avoided Henry James for several years for reasons I cannot figure out how I could even justify I remember reading The Turn of the Screw for some class years ago recalling a lot of sighing and grunting over his syntactical gymnastics and complete disregard for punctuation Now uarantined in my home with the outside world unravelling a master s thesis to finish up and after several years embedded in a maelstrom of mostly postmodern American novels on a level of difficulty that sometimes makes even me wonder why the hell I put myself through them year after year I decided the rumour of reading James as a very specific form of literary torture must have been greatly exaggerated Three novels later I d be pleased to read nothing but James for the rest of the yearIn James s novels I ve found everything I adore about fiction Or at least a specific kind of fiction I usually associate with the 20th century It s not necessarily because of his characters and their development because this works unlike anything else I ve read from the 19th century Usually we recognise characters via their actions and their thoughts Emma Bovary reads one too many romantic novels and commences an affair in order to spark her supposedly passionless marriage Raskolnikov rationalises that to commit a murder would be to act morally toward society and so he does and Ahab just wants to kill a whale This goes all the way back to Balzac of course but characters in James are recognised by what they think they know and what they don t do Everything is hidden in the margins of those marvellous sentences and conversations and perhaps it s even incorrect to consider them conversations at least in Portrait of a Lady since social interactions between characters are presented in dual monologues characters mostly listening to what they think the other person seems or what they want them to say Neither is my fascination fed particularly by his plots Again my knowledge is limited but it always seems to be the same with few variations Americans meet Europeans or vice versa enter unsuspected material wealth from sources deus ex and the world goes bananas because what about marriage then It s almost fairy tale like in its structure No what really gets me going on James is his goddamn style that razor edge mathematical prose so refined elegant whimsical verbose and excessive and yet it always runs like clock work as if written in a meter only known to JamesThe thing about James is the fact that he doesn t give an inch From what I have and will read he was almost exclusively concerned with crudely stated fancy people in fancy rooms But to ask why James kept writing and writing from this perspective to the point of obsession I think is also to ask why Dostoevsky was so interested in the depraved and the deprived why Thomas Mann kept conjuring anaemic artists why Melville kept his ships loaded with sailors of all types It s not that James is disinterested in the world outside the gilded dining halls of the rich and the very rich but rather it s because he seemed to find a microcosm within this type that marks the border between the Old and the New World Maybe they re not types after all they re walking anachronismsAnyway I wanted to write and better but I will have to read James in order to do so By all means read read read and I ll finish with William Gass who says it better than I doIt is not simply in the organization of character dialogue and action that Henry James reveals The Moral Passion nor is it reflected further in his treatment of surroundings but it represents itself in its ideal in the increasing scrupulosity of the style precision of definition respect for nuance tone the multiplying presence of enveloping metaphors the winding around the tender center of ritual lines like the approach of the devout and worshipful to the altar these circumlocutions at once protecting the subject and slowing the advance so that the mere utility of the core is despaired of and it is valued solely in the contemplative sightAnd In this exuisite form this perfect pace in this small music this crowd of meaning here is our Henry this is our man
