I would love to say that I chose this book because I saw it in some library and thanks to my keen eye and awesome brain I decided to read it because I had this weird hunch that it was going to be amazing Unfortunately the reason why I chose it is far less poetic I think a lot of us got to know this poet because of that movie From the first time I watched it I couldn t get a particular poem out of my head It was recited by a man at his partner s funeral Such a beautiful and intense poem Those verses were filled with love and sorrow vivid images and an overwhelming sense of hopelessness I loved it I knew I had to read about the guy that was able to write such thing Years and years passed by and here I am I found this collection and it was a delightful read Auden has a very personal style He wrote about many issues such as love loss politics religion I m no expert so I won t analyze forms and structures but I did love the content A lovely evocative wonderful content I love when writers can take any ordinary situation and describe it like it s the most miraculous thing in the world and with every beautiful word that their language has to offerIf I have to choose between heartbreaking bittersweet intense poetry and this hmm What to do What to do Tough call Yes I m still mad about that oneThere are many poems that I loved Will you turn a deaf ear The unknown citizen In memory of Sigmund Freud Law say the gardeners is the sun The loving one O what is that sound which so thrills the ear As I walked out one evening But all the clocks in the cityBegan to whirr and chime O let not Time deceive youYou cannot conuer TimeTrueAnyway I should end this review I really need to find another word to describe these things with the most important part of the anecdote I previously shared The poem I was referring to is Funeral Blues you knew Its origins I refuse to believe It s a beautiful thing to read and that s itEnjoy Or weep Or both Stop all the clocks cut off the telephonePrevent the dog from barking with a juicy boneSilence the pianos and with muffled drumBring out the coffin let the mourners comeLet aeroplanes circle moaning overheadScribbling on the sky the message He Is DeadPut cr pe bows round the white necks of the public doves Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton glovesHe was my North my South my East and WestMy working week and my Sunday restMy noon my midnight my talk my song I thought that love would last for ever I was wrongThe stars are not wanted now put out every one Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woodFor nothing now can ever come to any good Feb 23 14 Also on my blog

Auden Recent additions to knowledge about AudenAs in the original edition the new Selected Poems makes available the preferred original versions of some thirty poems that Auden revised later in life making it the best source for enjoying the many facets of Auden’s art in one volu. A dear friend of mine once recommended I buy a copy of the Oxford Book of English Verse It s a great way to get you back into poetry she saidOne morning she rolled over in my bed and hit her elbow against my new copy wedged between the mattress and the wall for easy access She laughed and with a singularity of purpose flipped it open to Auden s The Fall of Rome Read this one she said You ll like it I may have been remiss with working my way through the Oxford over the years but I ve read its Auden again and again and never looked back especially not when I got my hands on his Selected Poems While friends may come and go Auden has become something like the constant eternal friend we all dream of having someone whom we cannot wait to visit and always can at a whim and sit with for a while who never tires of our company and whom we in turn never tire of Listen Listen to him weave the gossamer threads of language like Penelope into an endless tapestry of beauty and form He is everything one could wish in a poet enigmatic evocative deeply classical astonishingly modern English is plastic in his handsHe restored my faith in poesy that it s than the vain contextless self indulgence that defines the so called verse one sees too often these days which one suspects is written in free verse precisely because its creators do not have the facility to write in meter Like a modern painter who can splash color on a canvas but cannot sketch an apple But it s than just the abandonment of form The ancient literary traditions in which art had moved for millennia have been willfully forgotten and we re all the poorer for itNow it s all about how many words you can find to rhyme with cock So thank God for the Audens of the world whose subtle subversion of form and content is so masterful precisely because he is just that an Old Master lost in this modern world but damned if he won t take what little it has to offerI ve read each poem countless times I will continue to do so for years to come Auden is not someone one has read he is a poet one reads is always reading He haunts one s dreams He comforts in the gray dawns of autumn enlightens in the bright mornings of spring He will gladly pass a minute with you on the last local train headed north on a ledge overlooking a verdant valley somewhere in that moment of uietude during a summer evening right before the thunder strikes the air electric and the light grey greenHis is a world dense with meaning with life with death He reminds us of our mortality Of our humanity and that it is must be beautiful

I trust few will dispute Auden s genius what friend Cody might call his prodigious bulge of greatness A bit like Eliot and a bit like Yeats not much like Rilke or Stevens Unafraid of occasional verse or opinion poems I am perhaps a bit too incorrigibly romantic modernist in my taste to follow him everywhere a poem like On the Circuit for example is hardly my cup of tea Nonetheless there s plenty here with which I do feel a deep sympathy and doubtless will continue to open up in timeAuden s early love poems are uite beautiful the sense of foreboding and tenderness all mixed together The narrator like a somewhat less pathetic but eually doomed J Alfred Prufrock Lay your sleeping head my loveHuman on my faithless armI m a bit of a sucker when it comes to the human to use it as an adverb there is what really gets me For Europe is absent This is an island and thereforeUnreal And the steadfast affections of its dead may be bought By those whose dream accuse them of being Spitefully alivewhile I am of course for too cheap to try and purchase the affections of the dead my dreams do sometimes accuse me of being spitefully alive so I can halfway relate mad Ireland hurt you into poetryNow Ireland has her madness and her weather stillFor poetry makes nothing happen it survivesIn the valley of its saying where executivesWould never want to tamper it flows southFrom ranches of isolation and the busy griefsRaw towns that we believe and die in it survivesA way of happening a mouth Don Juan so terrified of death he hears Each moment recommending itAnd knows no argument to counter theirs Trapped in their vile affections he must findAngels to keep him chaste a helpless blindUnhappy spook he haunts the urinalsExisting solely by their miraclesI m not in love with all of Auden s op ed poems but The Shield of Achilles is truly remarkable has it ever been set to music one of the most moving anti war statements I know The thin lipped arr Hephaestos hobbled away Thetis of the shining breastsCried out in dismayAt what the god had wroughtTo please her son the strongIron hearted man slaying AchillesWho would not live long
